Just more than a week ago, Lego released a Spider-man set based on Spider-man: No Way Home–Spider-Man Final Battle 76261. Today, I will be looking at the pros and cons of this build and minifigures I noticed after purchasing this set myself.
What’s in the box?
This set includes 900 pieces, 9 minifigures, an instruction manual, and a sticker sheet.
The model itself is full and allows for 360 degree play and display. The build is meant to be the head of the Statue of Liberty, on which the final battle in the No Way Home movie occurred. At first I was confused why it was the tan copper color instead of green, but after looking into it, the statue is actually that color in the movie as it is going under reconstruction. The set includes three clear stands that allow minifigures to be displayed as flying, jumping, or falling. Beneath the model is a round stand that allows the build to be easily carried. The set also includes a Doctor Strange portal and Doctor Strange’s device, the Machine de Kadavus—meant to warp all of Spider-man’s enemies back home.
The build strongly reminded me of the Lego Apocalypseburg set—both sets used very similar designs for the Statue of Liberty’s head, such as hotdog pieces for eyebrows.
The build is well-done, sturdy, and detailed. Some of the details include a homage to Sandman, which can be found underneath a roof door. Also, another door in the back opens up to another Doctor Strange portal—with a sticker showing the Sanctum Sanctorum.
Honestly, I can’t think of any complaints for the actual model itself. I think it could have been cool if it was built bigger, but that would have also led to a larger price. Then again, more minifigures could have been included if the set were bigger—such as Sandman and Lizard.
Speaking of minifigures, let’s look at those next. The 9 included are Spider-man (Tom Holland), Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man (Tobey Maguire), and Amazing Spider-man (Andrew Garfield), MJ, Ned, Doctor Strange, Green Goblin, Electro, and Doc Ock.
The Spider-man figures all look really good and include heads and hairs so their masks can be removed. I love that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-man includes silver webbing and all of the other details that make these minifigures look like their live-action counterparts. I almost feel like the faces could have been done better, as I’ve seen Lego minifigures really resemble real people before, those these ones don’t seem to resemble their actors as much as I would like them to.
MJ and Ned look great, and their faces look good, though their clothing seems inaccurate. I’m not sure if Lego did this so they could use more generic-ish torso pieces, but these figures definitely need different shirts in order to be more accurate to the movie/characters. Both of these figures include dual-sided heads with different expressions. Doctor Strange I believe is the same minifigure that appears in other recent Marvel sets. He includes his removable cape and his device from No Way Home.
Green Goblin includes a dual-sided head as well with goggles on one side. His face and torso look good, though he is missing printed legs—which I think would have added a lot to this figure. Otherwise he looks good, and he includes a glider and some pumpkin bombs.
Electro looks great and it’s nice to finally have a live-action version of this minifigure. He includes yellow lightning bolts and printed legs.
Last, but not least, there is Doctor Octopus. He includes two faces, one of which is happy and the other is angry—perhaps to show his different sides in the movie. He includes robotic arms, printed legs, and is the best designed villain in this set in my opinion.
Notably lacking, though, is Sandman and Lizard minifigures—mostly Lizard, as we’ve already received many Sandman minifigures in the past. A Lizard minifigure would have been a really amazing inclusion, as (unlike all the other villains in this set) we’ve never received a Spider-man Lizard minifigure before! Due to this, I hope Lego makes a few more No Way Home sets, perhaps smaller and not including the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-man minifigures. Maybe these smaller sets could just include Tom Holland’s Spider-man (to keep the others rare) and some more minifigures, such as Aunt May in her MCU form, Sandman, and Lizard.
My Thoughts?
I loved the set—there were only a few things I wish were done differently. My favorite aspects were the inclusion of all three live-action Spider-mans as minifigures, the sheer number of minifigures, and the details and sturdiness of the model. Things I wish would have been different include the addition of a Lizard minifigure and better torsos for MJ and Ned. This set seems very similar to another new Marvel set just released, called Endgame Final Battle: See that one here
