LEGO Avatar Floating Mountains: Site 26 & RDA Samson: REVIEW

Welcome back to the New Brick Times! Today I will be reviewing a Lego Avatar set: Floating Mountains: Site 26 & RDA Samson 75573, a set based on the first Avatar movie released in 2009.

What’s in the box?

The set includes three instruction manuals, 887 pieces, five minifigures, and a horse (I guess it’s not really a horse, but close enough).

The instruction manuals are cool in that they include images of each model you build for the set, except these images show what the builds looked like in the movie, which is cool. This is a detail that I’ve noticed is present in every Lego Avatar set.

The five minifigures include two blue Na’vi alien people, and three humans—humans from this movie are a nice inclusion, as barely any of the Lego Avatar sets include minifigures that aren’t aliens.

The two Na’vi-Avatar people included are Jake Sully, the main protagonist of the movie, and Norm Spellman. I think both minifigures look really good, though I would have also liked to see Norm have leg printing, like every other Na’vi minifigure. Because he’s wearing pants, though, I guess Lego decided to keep his long legs monochrome. Both of these minifigures also include weapons.

The three humans include Jake Sully, but in his human form, Dr. Grace Augustine, and Trudy Chacon. Again, I think all of these minifigures look really good. All three have dual-sided faces, with Jake’s and Grace’s faces having oxygen masks on one side. Jake Sully comes with his wheelchair which actually fits through the door. I believe this to be different from Lego wheelchairs of the past.

Finally there’s the horse—or direhorse is what it’s called. I think this is my favorite part, honestly. It looks a lot like other Lego horses, but I think it’s really cool that it has six legs and other alien features. The brick in its back pops out so that minifigures can ride on it. Also, its antennae thing connects to the Na’vi minifigures’ hair—a nice touch.

Now, onto the model itself. Together, the pieces make a RDA Samson helicopter, a stand for the helicopter, and a Site 26 base.

The helicopter looks good and has propellors that can rotate in any direction. The guns on front can shoot round 1 x 1 Lego tiles as well. It connects to a little stand that holds the vehicle up in the air.

The base has a removable top so that you can look into it. Inside, is a little desk and the chamber Jake Sully uses to connect to his Avatar self—which actually fits a minifigure inside.

My Thoughts?

I really like this set, but I am also a fan of the Avatar movies. The blue, tall, alien minifigures and the six-legged horse are all really cool. I don’t think I would recommend the set if you are not a fan of the movies, though, as many of the details in this set require knowledge of the first Avatar movie. If you are an Avatar fan, then yes, you definitely need this set—as it is the only Avatar set to include Jake Sully in his human form. Dr. Grace Augustine, Trudy Chacon, and Norm Spellman are also minifigures that don’t appear in any other Avatar sets. I think the best part of the actual build-part is the helicopter, which feels sturdy and very moveable. Overall, I really like this set and would definitely recommend it. As of writing, July 26, you can actually get this set for 30% off here at this link–though I am unsure how long this discount will last.
